How We Chose Our Beta Reading Team

Who knew that the offer of a chance to be paid to read - combined with a picture of a cute and cuddly capybara reading - would equal a viral post on Threads?

Not me!

But that’s exactly what happened when I posted the above picture.

Within a couple of days, I had nearly 2,400 responses on a sign-up form, along with hundreds of DMs and keen interest from readers across every genre and from all corners of the world!

What could I ever do with all these readers!?! I honestly thought I’d get 20 – 30 scammer responses, and 5 or 6 genuine ones! I never expected the level of response it brought!

I knew I had to narrow it down somehow to build the strongest possible beta reading team, but where to start?

Round 1

A seemingly obvious starting point seemed to be to filter it down in the first instance by English speaking countries, which I initially assumed to be primarily the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. However, after doing a bit of research, it turns out that Singapore and South Africa are also

primarily English speaking countries with strong reading communities as well, so they were added to the list.

Of course, this isn’t to say that other countries don’t have strong English-speaking communities, and in fact many do have very strong education and business infrastructures based around English and certainly would have a lot of fluent English readers, but we had to start somewhere!

So the country filter narrowed down the list to approximately 900 readers.

Round 2

I then sent an invite to those 900 readers to complete a second form that asked further information about things like preferred reading genres, any trigger warnings and content sensitivities, and any previous beta reading experience, as well as asking them to confirm that they wouldn’t share, distribute or replicate any author’s work or upload any author’s work to AI.

Out of the 900 invites, 515 responded by the deadline!

But that was still far too many readers to ever be able to fairly distribute work, so I got to carefully reviewing their written responses.

Some readers had limited beta reading experience, but wrote incredibly thoughtful answers that showed genuine enthusiasm and insight, while others had truly impressive backgrounds, including developmental editors, audiobook narrators, journalists, other authors and writers, school and university English professors, and educational degrees in literature and publishing!

From these responses, I was then able to narrow it down to a final shortlist of 175 readers!

Round 3

The final 175 were invited to a final stage assessment, where they were asked to choose 1 of 4 sample excerpts of an actual work-in-progress manuscript that had been generously volunteered by an author, and to provide sample feedback on the excerpt.

The quality and standard of the responses simply blew my mind!

Some readers left over 100 in-line comments and 2+ pages of written feedback on just a short 5,000 word excerpt, with deep, thoughtful opinions, and observations on pacing, grammar and character development, as well as comments showing genuine emotional reactions.

But what really stood out most was the range of perspectives:

So many readers reacted to the same passage in completely different ways – which showed exactly the kind of authentic, emotional responses that AI could NEVER!

The Final Team!

After a brutal week of combing through the incredible and slightly overwhelming amount of responses, I eventually chose the final core team of 66 beta readers, and a backup team of 20 more just in case there is greater demand!

Our team includes readers with preferences across a huge range of genres, from dark romance and fantasy, to non-fiction, self-help and everything in between.
